MULTILINE TRIPS UNITEC FOR 2-1 RECORD, 69-62
Multiline picked up its second straight win by outlasting a very deep Unitec squad and handing them their first loss in the 2008 ABU Corporate Cup 1st Jam, 69-62.
Dunhill Villaruel starred in this game for Multiline, displaying a scorching shooting display which saw him make 5 of his 6 triples in the second half alone. All of his three-pointers came at crucial stretches in the closely contested ballgame, as Unitec traded blow after blow with Multiline. Villaruel led his team with 20 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Epoy del Rosario contributed 17 points, 18 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals for Multiline.
It was a close game all the way, as neither team led by more than 4 points until Multiline broke from a 60-all score in the dying minutes. Crucial defensive stops by Tonton Gonzales, Joseph Gaytano and Elmor Manalili led to timely conversions on the offensive end, as Multiline had difficulty finding the bottom of the basket in the final two minutes. Gonzales scored 10 points and hauled down 8 rebounds while handing out 2 assists. Manalili had 9 points and 3 rebounds, while Gaytano had 8 rebounds to go with 2 assists. Gasie May also contributed valuable minutes for Multiline, sparking the team on several occasions with spectacular finishes to the rim.
Unitec paraded a slew of big men throughout the game, anchored by heady quarterbacking from Alex Evangelista and Jun Roberto. Evangelista had 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, while Roberto had 4 steals to go with 10 points and 2 assists. Chris Co shared in the scoring honors as he darted his way to 14 points and 3 steals, while Joel Ratuita went for 10 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Center Nats Francisco dominated the boards and patrolled the lane for 16 rebounds and 6 blocks with 3 assists.
