BOYSEN STAVES OFF MOLDEX IN OT, 105-104
Moldex found a way to tie the game in the dying seconds of regulaton play, but came up short of duplicating the feat in the extra period to finally surrender the loss to a very impressive Boysen five, 105-104.
Displaying mental toughness and grit in close games, Boysen is now sitting on a tournament-leading 3-0 win-loss record. This win was the hardest to carve, though.
After going back and forth with Moldex throughout the game, led by Richard Ortiz’ 30 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks, Boysen found themselves with a six-point lead with less than a minute remaining. All appeared lost for Moldex until Jeff Uy sank a booming trey to cut the lead to 3 with only 27 seconds remaining.
Boysen turned to a 4-corner offense, swinging the ball around the court to waste precious seconds off the clock. But Andrew Ambatali intercepted the ball near halfcourt and drove all the way to cut the lead to 1. Moldex fouled and got another chance after a Boysen split from the charity stripe. Ambatali drove hard again toward the basket, got fouled with 3.7 seconds left and calmly sank both free throws to force overtime at 88-88.
The overtime period belonged to Roy Punla, however, as he converted on 9 of 10 free throws to hold off Moldex. Punla ran rings around Moldex defenders to score timely baskets and repeatedly troop to the charity stripe. He finished with 29 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Simon Mangio and Jeff Gaw helped to keep Moldex together throughout the game, Mangio scoring 23 points with 5 rebounds and Gaw leading his team with 27 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Leo Mamaradlo turned in 14 points and 11 rebounds with 2 assists.
